In the 1970s I worked for Federated Department Stores. Previously, that company had been the main investment I was responsible for when I worked on Wall Street. I joined them because it was the greatest fashion merchant of its era, a wonderful company with a fascinating history and an unusual business model. In that era its Bloomingdale’s division made the cover of Time Magazine. It was the biggest, best, and most profitable of the great department store companies when they were the best retail training grounds in America. Today the company is called Macy’s.

In an experiment, I have audio recorded the story of Federated and my thoughts, which last about 25 minutes. This is an experiment on my part – and yours. Please let me know what you think of this, and how the experience compares to reading it. Let me know (gary@hooversworld.com) if you have any technical problems. You will need to register in order to listen to or download it, but that should be easy and is definitely free.  Start by clicking the link below, or right click on it and save it to your computer.
